Veolia Nuclear Solutions – Federal Services received a notice of award to begin construction of a multi-million-dollar water detention system at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS) Decontamination and Decommissioning Project, located in Piketon, Ohio. This project is one of DOE’s largest decommissioning projects in the United States.
The site’s prime contractor, Fluor-BXWT Portsmouth, LLC (FBP), selected Veolia in part due to the company’s in-depth knowledge of the Portsmouth site and vast experience with the decontamination and decommissioning activities, said Billy Morrison, head of VNSFS.
“We are extremely pleased by FBP’s decision and believe it is a testament to the deep-seated experience, operational know-how, and unique technological capabilities our team can marshal for critical projects such as this,” Morrison said.
Veolia will be responsible for building a water detention system around the X-326 process building in preparation for its demolition. The X-326 is one of three large structures built at PORTS in the 1950s to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons production. It has a footprint of approximately 29 acres. The water detention system will be capable of controlling any runoff surface water from D&D activities, preventing it from entering local water supplies. The project also includes removal and sealing of utilities and systems that interfere with the water detention system construction prior to the actual construction.
This contract creates an opportunity for Veolia to strengthen its relationships in the DOE federal market and the decontamination and decommissioning community. It expands the company role in cleanup of the PORTS site, where Veolia also supports FBP and DOE on other multi-year projects, including environmental compliance and construction of the On-site Waste Disposal Facility.
