Veolia Joins Top Industry Leaders at 2024 Waste Management Symposia

Marking 50 Years: Proud of Our Past, Poised for the Future

Veolia will once again join top industry leaders at the 2024 Waste Management Symposia (WMS), taking place March 10-14 in Phoenix, Arizona.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the conference, and the theme incorporates the milestone: “Marking 50 Years: Proud of Our Past, Poised for the Future.” Nearly 3,000 people from 30 countries – the largest number yet - are expected to attend the five-day event to discuss the global tasks of radioactive waste management, decommissioning and site remediation.

VNS Federal Services is Veolia Environment’s mitigated entity in the U.S. focused on providing solutions for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s most complex cleanup challenges.

“We continue to build our brand in this market as a trusted solution-oriented partner for technology innovations and engineering services, while delivering full range of waste management/D&D capabilities,” said Steve Moore, President and CEO of VNS Federal Services. “We are excited to showcase our solutions, including Veolia’s GeoMelt® vitrification technology, and ways we can support all the tough cleanup challenges that remain throughout the DOE complex.”

WMS provides the premier open forum for discussing and seeking safe, environmentally responsible, technically sound and cost-effective solutions to the management and disposition of radioactive wastes and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.

Experts from Veolia and its affiliate company, Veolia Nuclear Solutions (VNS) are sharing their expertise in presentations, on panel discussions and as session chairs throughout the week.

  • Paul Sylvester, a consultant for VNS with 25 years of experience in water treatment, and Philippe Bernard, VNS Nuclear Measures Expert, will present “Lab-Scale Testing and Modeling of Ion-Selective Sorbents for Nuclear Effluent Decontamination” on March 11.
  • David Gilson, General Manager of Alaron Nuclear Services – Veolia’s licensed radioactive materials processing facility in Pennsylvania, will discuss Alaron’s 40-year history, recent improvements and how it maintains its stellar safety record in a presentation on March 12.
  • Veolia Project Manager Kevin Finucane will present “An Innovative Approach for the Treatment of Fukushima ALPS Dehydrate by GeoMelt® In-Container Vitrification (ICV)™” on March 14.
  • Julien Robert, Laboratory Director for VNS, will present “Radon Emanation from TENORM Waste: Experimental Demonstration of the Benefits of Vitrification” on March 14.
  • Bob Miklos, Veolia Executive Vice President of Program Assurance, will chair three panels throughout the conference: “The Fusion Breakthrough” on March 12; “Applications of Nuclear Reactors Including Fusion to Non-Power Production” and “Update of the DOE INL Site,” both on March 13.

Innovation, transformation and sustainability are key to the solutions Veolia provides for complex waste management issues worldwide. Attendees at WMS 2024 can use virtual reality to venture into Reactor No. 2 at Fukushima and experience VNS’ robotic boom solution to access and investigate the reactor.

Other highlights planned for the week:

  • Veolia will host a wine tasting at its booth (1006) during the opening reception March 10.
  • Veolia will participate in the DOE Job Fair taking place March 12-13.
  • Veolia will give away $100 each day of WMS for the winners to spend with DonorsChoose to support an education-related project in their own community.
